Ikaro Batik is a textile artist, professor and batik enthusiast. He currently lives and works in Chile. Originally from 5th century Indonesia, batik is a wax-resist dyeing technique on fabric or paper. It was declared an “Intangible Heritage of Humanity” by UNESCO in 2009.
Ikaro’s work combines a love of batik with a strong connection to the culture of his native land. His artistic work results from the study, contemplation and assessment of the endemic flora and fauna in Chile. Ikaro is also inspired by the artistic-spiritual expressions of the native people in the Andes, the Atacama Desert, the semi-arid North, the Central Valleys and Patagonia.
His work has been featured multiple times at different venues, including the “Valparaíso Birds Festival.” In July of 2019, Ikaro had the honor of being invited by the Indonesian embassy in Chile to show his batik artwork at the "So Far and So Close" exhibition.
To make his batik pieces, Ikaro uses immersion and direct dyeing methods with Jacquard’s Procion MX Dyes.
